IB Middle Years Programme Overview

Albanian College

Albanian College Durres was authorized to provide the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in May 2017. The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) adopted the MYP in 1994 for students aged 11-16 specifically to support the IBO’s aim of developing internationally minded people who, recognize their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet and to help create a better and more peaceful world.

Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning

  • Significance of Interdisciplinary Learning

Albanian College supports the IB position that adolescent learners organically make connections as they learn new ideas or information, or as they seek to make connections to the various environments around them. While Secondary disciplines can often develop knowledge and understanding in isolation, ACD aligns with the IB philosophy that “an ever-changing world also demands education that empowers people to integrate disciplines in novel and creative ways.”

MYP Projects

  • Aims of the MYP Projects

The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:
    • Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context
    • Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
    • Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
    • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations
    • Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
    • Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

  • Personal Project

Albanian College believes the process of exploring a personal line of inquiry is imperative to the development and practice of lifelong learning skills, as well as deepening one’s understanding of topics and ideas. Therefore, all Grade 10 students are required to complete a Personal Project to take responsibility for completing a significant piece of work over an extended period of time.

MYP SUBJECT BRIEFS

The MYP is a school-wide, all-inclusive programme that recognises the diversity and varied needs of students.

Instruction is prepared around summative assessments in a back-to-front approach. This “backwards design” enables teachers to fully prepare students through purposefully planned instruction and frequent, ongoing formative assessments.

Each strand of the assessment criteria is formally assessed at least twice a year, and teachers use the criteria to apply a best-fit judgement to the students’ final products.
