Curriculum: MYP Subject Briefs and Assessment Framework

The learner: Who is an MYP student?

The MYP is a school wide, all inclusive programme that recognizes the diversity and varied needs of any given population of students. Instruction is designed after summative assessments are determined, with the appropriate assessment criteria in mind. This “backwards design” enables teachers to fully prepare students through purposefully planned instruction and ongoing, frequent formative assessments. Each strand of the assessment criteria is formally assessed a minimum of two times across the year, and teachers apply a “best fit” judgement for the final criteria at the end of the year.

Students with unique learning styles, such as accelerated learners, or students who need specifically structured lessons in order to achieve a minimum mark of 3 against the criteria are able to determine their growth throughout the year by accessing ManageBac, meeting with teachers, and advocating for extra support or enrichment activities during the embedded Flex time each week.

Learning: What’s worth knowing?

The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group in each year of the programme. In years 4 and 5, students have the option to take courses from six of the eight subject groups within certain limits, to provide greater flexibility in meeting local requirements and individual student learning needs.
Each year, students in the MYP also engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups.
