MYP Service as Action

The learner: Who will benefit and how?

A "Service as action" (SA) attitude is a shared value throughout our grades 6-10 community, our school as a whole, and Albania, and one in which we strive to maintain and develop in our students. Our grades 6-10 learners develop the mindsets and skills to be caring participants of the world's communities, who pursue opportunities to demonstrate a personal commitment to service in order to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.Ultimately, the students will benefit from the experience of meeting a need in their local, national or global community by developing the empathy and skills needed to promote a sustainable, equitable and hopeful future for themselves and others.

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.' -Mother Theresa

Learning: What’s worth knowing?

The specific “learning outcomes” that have been identified by the IB for the completion of service as action projects provide the substance of students’ self-reflection on their performance or contribution. By focusing on one or more of these outcomes during the process and reflecting on their degree of success attaining the outcome, students can become more confident, self-regulated learners.

The learning outcomes are:
• To become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth
• To undertake challenges that develop new skills
• To discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities
• To persevere in action
• To work collaboratively with others
• To develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
• To consider the ethical implications of their actions.
